Job Description:
Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is representing a large dairy located in California who is searching for a qualified Dairy Manager to oversee the day to day operations. The goal of the Dairy Manager is to manage cows and related equipment inventory, and associate people with a watchful eye, caring for the health, safety, and all other aspects of animal welfare, and stewardship in a professional manner.
General Duties:
- Report to work on time each day and begin the day’s activitie
- Communicate with assistant herdsman and team as needed
- Adhere to policies, procedures, rules, regulations, laws, etc. set forth by team leaders and Alexandre Family Farm
- Report KPIs weekly and monthly per management needs required by Alexandre Family Farm Dairy KPI’s
- Animals, People and Parlor Management
Key Results Areas:
Safety:
- Always make safety a priority.
- Follow all safety policies, protocols, and practices.
- Report safety concerns, potential hazards, and any safety violations to your supervisor immediately.
Drive and operate all equipment in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
- Perform safety meetings as required by management.
Equipment Operation:
- Perform assigned operations and ensure they are completed safely, accurately, consistently, efficiently, and according to policy.
- Maintain the orderly appearance of equipment, facilities, and other work areas.
- Maintain equipment in a manner that limits breakdowns, safety issues, and violations. Notify the team lead immediately of breakdowns and malfunctions.
- Inspect equipment for mechanical and safety issues. Inform the mechanic and notify the shop lead immediately of potential breakdowns and or malfunctions.
Preparation tasks
- Check in with Milk Parlor, Feeder, and Calf crew daily and understand the required needs for each department
- Work with the assistant herdsman and train in the case of your absence
Cow Stages of Lactation
- Manage the inventory and vaccination schedule of all cattle groups, and train the team accordingly
- Manage the calf barn thoroughly and train the team accordingly
- Monitor, identify, and treat hospital and lame cows
- Appropriate vaccine program management
Milk Parlor
- Assist parlor leads with items needed as requested
- Manage parlor maintenance crew and equipment needs
- Manage cow groups and the associated milking schedule
Feeding
- Understand cow health through feed quality
- Work with leads to build a ration for cow groups
- Implement ration with feeders
- Work with the farm nutritionist.
Additional Duties:
- Accurately record all cow records as required by management and input into Dairy Comp
- Manage all cow groups and 24-hr scheduling of feeders, milkers, cow pushers, calf crew, and cattle flow
- Assist other team members as needed (including but not limited to): moving animals, pasture maintenance, general repairs, etc.
- Recognize that animal welfare is critical to the success of the farm and associated members, and ensure that animal health is a priority
Dress and Personal Protective Equipment: Must wear appropriate clothing for all operations to protect against injury, including but not limited to rubber boots, coveralls, arm sleeves, sanitary gloves, and other equipment as required by leadership.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to move easily and quickly around large cows, stand for long periods on concrete, work periodically onsite during inclement weather, engage in repetitive tasks including chalking cow tailheads, sorting cows, and patiently and calmly interacting with, sometimes, uncooperative cows. The following abilities are also required:
Strength (Lifting, Carrying, Pulling, Pushing)
Pulling a difficult calf during the calving process
Must be able to lift up to 50#
Standing - On concrete or dirt
Walking - Fetching cows - Movement through the farm
Hearing - Basic hearing skills required
Communicate clearly with the team
