Candidate Description:
Shawn's journey in the dairy industry began on a small dairy farm in South Dakota, where he eventually took over the family operation in 2004. However, due to low milk prices, Shawn made the difficult decision to sell the cows in 2006. He then moved to Iowa and gained valuable experience working on two different dairies, one with 200 cows and the other with 400 cows, for a total of 5 1/2 years. During this time, he supervised 5 employees and honed his skills in various aspects of dairy farm management. In 2011, Shawn relocated to Kansas to work on a larger dairy farm with 3,000 cows, assuming the role of assistant manager and supervising 6 employees. His responsibilities expanded as he took on tasks such as managing employee work schedules, data entry, ordering medicine and supplies, administering herd health treatments such as IVs, artificial insemination (AI), drenches, pregnancy checks, antibiotic injections, employee supervision and performance reviews, as well as making culling decisions. Additionally, Shawn demonstrated proficiency in operating farm equipment including skid loaders, tractors, and loaders. Shawn's dedication and expertise led him to his current role as assistant manager on a newly built 4,500 cow dairy in Ohio, where he supervises a team of 10 employees. Throughout his career, Shawn has continually demonstrated his commitment to the dairy industry and his ability to take on diverse responsibilities, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of each dairy farm he has worked on.
