This Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT candidate grew up farming in western Utah on 7,000 acres of small grains, tomatoes and sweet corn. He graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree as a manufacturing engineer. Following college, he designed tooling and processes for manufacturing different products, while still farming on the side at nights and weekends. He had the opportunity to start operating a large farm in southern Idaho and the family farm in northern Utah, so he quit the manufacturing job and started farming full time. He had 600 acres of sod and over 4,000 acres of small grains and alfalfa hay. He had 12 semis operating and many tractors, forklifts, sod harvesters, air seeder, swather, balers, combines in two locations and 35 employees. He specialized in sport turf and custom growing for golf courses. After the farm was sold in Idaho and the family farm sold in Utah he worked for a friend in Ohio as their sod farm manager. While working at this farm they invested in automation and automated all the harvesting equipment and changed the way the sod was grown to increase quality which then made the farm profitable. He is currently the Division Manager for an operation in Washington with 50 employees in the peak season. They grow sod, lavender, sweet corn, pumpkins and make a corn maze for the fall season. They also have a wholesale nursery with perennials and trees that are sold. They plant 280 acres of sod every year and the rest of the farm is in the other crops. He has purchased new tractors in Washington and has updated most to precision agriculture for planting, tillage and harvesting. He has been involved in most operations in agriculture, has always been very organized and able to accomplish many jobs running simultaneously. He is mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot problems accurately. He has worked with chemicals and spraying. He can organize for efficiency and get the job accomplished. He can learn and develop new operations and always try to stay up with the latest in equipment, fertilizer, seed varieties. He works and thinks like an owner and always runs a business like he has a vested interest in the business succeeding and thriving.
