Job Title: Ranch Assistant
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong Cow/Calf experience required – calving, newborn care, assisting difficult births, pairing, tagging, doctoring
- Solid background in cow herd health, vaccinations, nutrition, pasture management, and seasonal care
- Ability to identify, diagnose, and treat sick cattle (both cows and calves)
- Experience feeding cattle; understanding of rations, reading bunks, and maintaining consistent feeding schedules
- Good with feeding and haying equipment – bale processors, loaders, tractors, feed wagons
- General ranch maintenance, fencing, equipment upkeep, and ability to handle routine repairs
- Familiar with ranch technology and recordkeeping tools; iPad/PLS/Performance Livestock Online experience a plus
- Hardworking, dependable, strong work ethic with a positive attitude
- Effective decision-maker, good communication skills, ability to work independently but also be a team player
- Row-crop, small grains, or silage support experience helpful, but secondary to livestock experience
- College degree beneficial, but verified hands-on cattle experience is more important
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a strong Cow/Calf Ranch Employee to join this diversified Virginia ranching operation. The primary focus of this role is cow/calf management, from calving through weaning, with additional responsibilities in cattle feeding and general ranch operations.
This person will take an active role in:
- Daily cow/calf care, including calving, tagging, pairing, doctoring, and monitoring health
- Feeding cow herd and youngstock, reading bunks, maintaining ration consistency, and monitoring overall nutrition
- Identifying and treating sick cattle; pulling, sorting, vaccinating, and working cattle confidently
- Pasture moves, checking waterers, mineral programs, and seasonal management of cow herds
- Operating feeding and haying equipment, tractors, loaders, and support equipment
- Assisting with commercial cows and a small registered herd – may feed in the morning and perform diversified ranch/farm tasks in the afternoon
- Help with silage operations, manure hauling, fencing, and general yard and ranch maintenance
- Participating in fieldwork or row-crop support as needed when cattle chores are completed
- Using ranch technology (iPad, Performance Livestock Online) for recordkeeping and performance tracking
