This Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT candidate graduated from Oklahoma State University with a major in Rangeland Ecology and Management with a minor in Ag Business. After college, he focused on the skills required for producing cattle. He has worked in every section of the live cattle industry from seed stock to feedlot focusing on commercial ranching. The operations he has worked on have varied in size from helping smaller family ranches to large corporate ones that run close to 10,000 mother cows. He managed a seed stock operation until the ranch was unfortunately dispersed due to the owner’s retirement. His focus has been on stockmanship, grass management and animal health. In his experience, cattle that are handled correctly gain more weight, raise better calves and have overall better health. He believes that many ranches can increase profitability by taking better care of their rangelands for better grazing practices lead to increased stocking rates, which will increase the success of the operation. He takes great pride in caring for the stock that is assigned to him. Spotting and treating sick cattle is one of his favorite ranch chores and something he strives for excellence in. One of his strongest skill sets is his use of Excel to create working spreadsheets that have advanced his grazing plans by inputting information and using the spreadsheet to calculate the correct grazing days as well as spreadsheets that encompass all different types of ranch data, from extensive breeding programs to annual calving records. Combining data into one area has allowed he and his managers to make better and more educated decisions. Data collection and inputs are skills that he enjoys and hopes to use to evolve his career. He has thoroughly enjoyed time spent working on a crew as well as managing a small operation and is now looking forward to progressing his career into large scale management and getting more involved in the business aspect of the industry, something like Ranch Manager or Ranch General Manager.
